DocsAutomator vs. Carbone

Your app or AI agent doesn't need a PDF. It needs a contract that comes back signed. Carbone fills a Word or Office template with your data and hands you the file. Sending it, getting it signed and filing it back is your code's job. DocsAutomator fills a Google Doc or Word template, and the same API call sends it for an e-signature or a one-click yes. The signed copy goes back to the record it came from. Plans start at $19 a month for 100 documents, billed yearly, signing included.

From your data to a signed contract

Making the file is step one. Here's who does the other three.

One contract, step by step
  1. 1Make the document
    With Carbone: Your code calls POST /render with a stored template ID and your JSON, and gets a render ID back.
    With DocsAutomator: Your code calls POST /createDocument with the automation ID and your data.
  2. 2Keep the file
    With Carbone: The file can be downloaded once, within an hour, so your code fetches it and stores it.
    With DocsAutomator: DocsAutomator saves it to Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox, and gives you a download link you can set to last from 5 minutes to a year.
  3. 3Get it signed
    With Carbone: E-signature support is in Beta on Carbone v5. It places the signature fields and returns their coordinates, which your code sends to your signature provider, such as DocuSign, Yousign, Documenso or SignWell.
    With DocsAutomator: If signing or Acceptance is switched on, the same call sends it. The recipient signs, or clicks Accept without an account, and we send the reminders.
  4. 4File it back
    With Carbone: When your provider reports the signature, your code collects the signed PDF and updates your database.
    With DocsAutomator: The signed or accepted PDF goes back to the record, such as an Airtable attachment field or a Notion Files property, and your webhook gets the webhookParams you sent.
Based on Carbone's API reference and e-signature docs and DocsAutomator's API docs, October 2026.

This is the whole request. Each key in data matches a placeholder in your template, so {{customer_name}} becomes "Acme Ltd".

POST https://api.docsautomator.co/createDocument
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY

{
  "automationId": "YOUR_AUTOMATION_ID",
  "data": { "customer_name": "Acme Ltd" }
}

Who can change the wording

DocsAutomator

Your template is a Google Doc or a Word file, and the people who own the wording edit it there. When they change a sentence, your API call stays the same. Only a new placeholder needs a new value in the call.

An AI assistant in Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor connects over MCP. With a Google Doc template, it can only fill the placeholders: it sends the raw values, we format the numbers and dates, and the approved wording stays exactly as written. More on AI and agents.

Carbone

Carbone templates are files with tags in curly braces. You can upload them through the API, where they're stored on Carbone. Its docs list Google Docs as one editor you can design templates in.

For AI agents, Carbone has an open-source Carbone Skill that helps them design templates from a plain-language description.

What happens to your .docx templates

Your Word templates come with you. You retype Carbone's tags (single curly braces) as DocsAutomator placeholders such as {{client_name}}. A repeated row becomes a {{line_items_1}} row, and a condition becomes a section that shows or hides by a rule.

Our founder helps you move your templates, signers and signing flows over personally, at no extra cost.
